Designing for a Green New Deal

In the fall of 2019, an interdisciplinary studio of graduate students in the Weitzman School of Design took part in an exploration led by Billy Fleming (and advised by Richard Weller) of what it might mean to translate the broad principles of the Green New Deal into real projects in real communities. Their work focused on two key questions: (1) what areas of the US must be "won" in order to achieve the jobs, justice, and decarbonization goals of the Green New Deal?, and (2) what areas of the US could be brought into the coalition for climate action if the investments in quality of life and material benefits were made early and obvious there? Their work ultimately led them to focus on three regions: Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, and the Midwest. Students in the studio were: Chelsea Beroza, Allison Carr, Yvette Chen, Zachery Hammaker, Tiffany Hudson, Katie Lample, John Michael LaSalle, Joshua Reeves, Will Smith, Jesse Weiss, Katie Pitstick, Rosa Zedek, Leila Bahrami, Sara Harmon, and Rob Levinthal.
